What the hip-hop style sounds like
Feel-good hip-hop at about 92 beats per minute: punchy boom-bap drums, a warm bass line and a confident rap vocal, female or male. Each verse runs eight bars and the chorus is sung, so the song has something to rap along to and something to hum.
It is a celebration track, not a battle track. The lyrics stay clean: no swearing, no roasting, nothing you would mind a grandparent hearing at the party.
Rap lyrics: details that make good bars
- A nickname, especially one with a story behind it.
- A skill they show off: free throws, bowling, parallel parking, grilling.
- A place that is theirs: the court, the corner booth, the garage.
- A win they are proud of, big or small: a new job, a first apartment, a degree.
- A habit everyone teases them about.
- Numbers rap well: an age, a jersey number, a year, a street.
How the name holds up in a rap
Fast delivery is where names usually go wrong, so we tested it. In our listening checks Siobhan, Aoife and Nguyen all came through clearly in rapped verses, using the same respellings the singer gets for sung songs. If a name of yours still lands wrong, you can re-record once for free.
